Happy Thursday Three!
Here are this week's coaching tip, exercise tutorial and question to ponder for the week.
I. The On-Ramp 🚙
Once you're on the sliproad to the M25, there is no quick exit. You can't just slam it in reverse and head back down. You're committed.
Our actions have a similar moment. The on-ramp is where it's easier to move forward than to go back.
Take running, for example. Once you have your running shoes on and have closed your front door, you might as well run; sure, you could turn back, but often this tipping point nudges you forward, not back.
Cooking a meal? If you chopped onions, you might as well cook the meal, right?
Sometimes, it's easy to get overwhelmed by the end goal. Cooking a whole meal feels like a lot of work when you've just got home from work. A 10km run feels like a massive effort when Netflix is calling.
Yes, we want to do these things, but it's too easy to talk ourselves out of it. So instead of focusing on the whole task, double down on getting to your on-ramp —that point, once you get to it, you might as well keep going.
Cooking healthy meals = chopping up an onion.
Going to the gym before work = getting up & in the shower when that early alarm sounds.
Going for a run = Lacing up your shoes and leaving the house.
If you struggle to make a new habit stick, stop looking at the whole task. Double down on finding your on-ramp and focus on doing that instead.
II. Testing hip mobility
How well do your hips move? Let's find out...
The "figure four" is a simple test of your hip's ability to rotate. It's quick and easy to do.
How did you do?
Check out this guide to learn how to do it.
III. Quote to ponder
One minute of reading is better than never picking up a book. It's far better to do less than you hoped than to do nothing at all. - James Clear
I've been thinking about getting back into Jujitsu classes for weeks now. However, I've been struggling with the idea of how to fit in 3x sessions a week. Ironically, my eagerness to do 3x sessions has prevented me from attending even one class.
Sounds pretty silly when you read it. 😂
P.S. If you enjoyed this week's Thursday Three, share it with a friend.
Thanks,
Jamie
