Sometimes Maybe Good. Sometimes Maybe 💩

💡 Tooth Paste Is The Devil.

A theme that frequently pops up when people talk about health and fitness goals: the need "to be more consistent". Whether it's in the gym, the kitchen, or getting enough sleep, consistency is often highlighted as something people want to improve.

And there are not wrong but there is a tricky aspect of consistency that might be tripping you up. For starters, there are two different types: consistency of outcome and consistency of effort.

Consistency of outcome is when the same result happens over and over again. Imagine your favourite restaurant; you keep going back because you know you'll get that same awesome meal and top-notch service. Who wants to order their favourite dish only to find its quality varies with each visit, right?

When we talk about being "more consistent", this is usually the type of consistency we have in mind.

But let's not forget about consistency of effort. For example take kids and brushing their teeth . My wife and I put in the same effort every time, but the outcome can be a little... unpredictable (to put it mildly). If you want a laugh, this pretty much sums up our nightly routine.

Imagine you're back at your favourite restaurant, but this time, the chef's called in sick, the waiter's new, the kitchen's run out of half the ingredients, and it's the busiest time of the night. How's your favourite dish tasting now?

Similarly, how consistently you can hit the gym for three solid sessions this week is going to depend on a whole bunch of factors — work, sleep, kids, traffic, trains, injuries, pets, family, you name it.

When most of us say we want to be more consistent, we're expecting to operate under perfect conditions, achieving the same result every time. But let's face it, life doesn't always play ball. Our outcomes are subject to all the variables that are constantly changing. Like when your adorable little ones decide that today, toothpaste is the devil 😈

We can't always guarantee the outcome, but I like to think of it as the "Rule Of Five" 👋

  • 1 in 5 times, you'll be a stud.

  • 1 in 5 times, will be a dud.

  • The other three times are just ordinary, punch the ticket kinda days.

So next time you're beating yourself up for a less-than-perfect week/day/workout remember that it's your consistent effort that matters most, even when the outcomes are a bit messy.
