Protecting the asset 🥷

ree

I. Guilty Pleasure.

I've been a movie geek for as long as I can remember. One movie that's definitely a guilty pleasure of mine is "The Bodyguard", starring Kevin Costner.

Awesome movie, right? I still remember as a kid thinking I was super-cool for eating an apple with a knife after watching that kitchen scene (FYI, in case you want to watch it).

Apart from sharing my love for 90s movies, this relates to an important reminder that recently slapped me upside the head - we need to protect the asset- but in our case, it's not some singer; it's not our family, our jobs or our investments. It’s us; we are our number #1 asset.

We all face constant demands on our time and energy. We have people we care about, jobs, families, and responsibilities. The pressure to keep going and deliver results can sometimes become a threat to our ability to perform at our best.

To bring out our best, we need to be at our best.

And we can't do that if we consistently lack sleep, disregard downtime, and neglect our physical and mental well-being.

Sure, we can manage for a while, but eventually, it catches up with us. Just a word of caution: the decline is subtle, and we're often the last to notice its effects. Instead, those closest to us suffer the consequences first.

In case you're wondering, I'm not preaching from some pedestal of perfection and virtue. In fact, for the past six months, I've been neglecting my sleep, putting downtime at the bottom of my priorities, and generally wearing myself out.

I became more irritable, less patient, and found it increasingly difficult to stay focused.

My wife and, even worse, my kids could see it, but it took me a while to get the memo. Thankfully, last week, when we finally took a family break, I started to feel better. My mood improved, and I regained my old self.

Message received - I need to do a better job of protecting the asset. How about you? Is there something you can do this week to prioritise rest and recovery?

II. Mr. November

Well, as it's the start of November and we could all do with giving our shoulders a little TLC, here's a quick demo of the seated external rotations, AKA the Mr November*.

*Why do I call it that? because the seated position does look a tad like a dodgy calendar shoot; thus, Mr November 🤗

III. Dad Joke to Ponder

Why do keyboards never sleep?

---Because they have two shifts. 😄
