I. Needs vs. Wants ⚖️ - Part I
Most of us know what we need to do, but are often distracted by our desires to do something else instead...often it's the more fun thing.
I need eat more protein, but I want to indulge in more pizza.
I should address my shoulder pain, but I am drawn to lifting heavy weights.
I really must prioritize getting more sleep, but I am tempted to stay up late and binge-watch TV.

It's a tricky one; addressing our needs is often crucial for making meaningful progress; they represent the biggest areas for growth however they are rarely fun to do. Things like diet, sleep, mobility and stress management are hardly sexy. To make things worse, we often suck at them (at least to start); which further fuels our resistance against doing them.
On the flip side, our "wants" are generally more fun and satisfying but only represent the smallest area for growth in the long run or worse make up a distraction moving us further away from our goals. For example, plenty of people try to exercise their way into weight loss with little success. Squats might be hard work but changing you relationship with food is the real challenge!
With this in mind, I want to set you a little challenge. Take a few minutes to draw out your "needs versus wants" continuum. Identify the things you need to focus on (hint: these are the things we feel the most resistance to doing). Plot them on your continuum based on their “need” strength. The more significant, the closer to the "needs" end.
Then do the same for your wants, This is either the more desirable thing that is also part of the process (for example exercise is a part of weight loss) or a distraction that moves you further away (watching TV instead of sleeping). The higher up the continuum you place it, the stronger the desire you have to do it instead.

Next week, we will explore this list in greater detail but for now, focus on getting clear on your needs and wants.
II. Long drive = tight hips
I'm not sure if this is a sign that I'm well over 30 but if I spend more than 2 hours in a car my hips start to tighten up. The 90/90 is a simple go-to for reversing that post-drive hip stiffness.
Give it a try.
III. Quote to ponder
"The more important a call to action is, the more Resistance we will feel about answering it." The War Of Art by Steven Pressfield
This quote ties in perfectly with what we talked about today. The more resistance we feel towards something it's normally a pretty good sign that exactly what we need to focus on.
What actions are you feeling the most resistance towards?
P.S. If you enjoyed this week's Thursday Three, share it with a friend.
Thanks,
Jamie
